The National Farmers Union (NFU) of the UK has warned the government that the country is "sleepwalking" - walking into a food supply crisis₁ unconsciously & unprepared.
Farmers are under severe pressure from soaring fuel, fertiliser & feed costs. They predict crop yields to slump to record lows this year, while the UK government said that the food supply is highly resilient (as expected).
According to NFU & supermarkets, some of the foods expected to take a hit are eggs, milk, beef, tomatoes, cucumbers & pears amongst other fruits & vegetables.
Similar to other warnings, threats to the UK's food security quoted by NFU include inflation in inputs (energy, fertiliser & feed), labour shortages, Brexit issues, Avian flu outbreak, coronavirus pandemic & the war in Ukraine.
We can expect the UK to increase their food imports from the global food market as their domestic production dwindles – which means more food competition for the rest of the world.
Our Takeaways
The number of food shortage warnings sounded around the world are increasing at a fast pace. Most governments do not seem to be acknowledging the threat of it, at least not publicly.
The best thing we can do right now, is to increase our ability to be food self-sufficient.
If you live in an apartment or anywhere with limited space & land, the easiest foods to grow would be vegetables & small fruits.
Start learning how to grow your own food today - it is one of the wisest investments that will reward you & your loved ones well, in the coming months & years.
Always be growing,
